Photography – Time of No Reply

»The frontier is a wake-up call. At the frontier we can’t avoid the truth; the comforting layers of the quotidian, which insulate us against the world’s harsher realities, are stripped away, and, wide-eyed in the harsh fluorescent light of the frontier’s windowless halls, we see things as they are.« – Salman Rushdie, Step Across This Line, 2002

Just a stone’s throw from the North Sea at the very fringe of Denmark, Hanstholm Asylum Center houses about 300 asylum seekers. They wait for their application to pass through the Danish refugee authorities. These photographs are a record of my stays at the center and my attempt to illustrate the difficult task it is to leave your future in the hands of others.

Time of No Reply has been exhibited in Poor City, Roskilde Festival, 2012, at Denmark’s Political Festival, 2012, and at The Danish Research Festival, 2012. The exhibition was printed with support from The Politiken Foundation.
